The automobile

Almost no other technology has changed our lives so much. In 1885 the German engineer Carl Benz built the first automobile with a combustion motor and thus revolutionized the way individuals move about. Other engineers such as Gottlieb Daimler or Wilhelm Maybach developed their own automobiles independently, thereby establishing Germany’s reputation as a car country.

The first automobiles, however, were originally considered too loud, too fast, and too dangerous. Kaiser Wilhelm II is supposed to have said: “I believe in horses. Automobiles are only a passing fad.” But he was not the only one to later change his mind. Today, the number of cars in the world is estimated to be around a billion, with German models at the top of the list.
