The automobile is one of the most important inventions since industrialization. Almost no other technology has changed our lives so much. In 1885 the German engineer Carl Benz built the first automobile with a combustion motor and thus revolutionized the way individuals move about. Other engineers such as Gottlieb Daimler or Wilhelm Maybach developed their own automobiles independently, thereby establishing Germany’s reputation as a car country.
The first automobiles, however, were originally considered too loud, too fast, and too dangerous. Kaiser Wilhelm II is supposed to have said: “I believe in horses. Automobiles are only a passing fad.” But he was not the only one to later change his mind. Today, the number of cars in the world is estimated to be around a billion, with German models at the top of the list.
